How to overcome your gym intimidation and join in

How to overcome your gym intimidation and join inHow to overcome your gym intimidation and join inFor anyone taking theirfirst steps to working out,the gym can be a frightening place. When I first began properly exercising a few years ago I was terrified by the bright lights, pounding music, and complicated contraptions promising to build muscles I didnt even know I had. With fitness fanatics seeming to know exactly what they were doing and dominating everything from the weight machines to the studio, I felt too daunted to do much more than a cursoryrun on the treadmillbefore shuffling back to the changing room. God forbid I should ever even venture close to the weights section, crammed full of grunting men heaving the kind of barbells Im pretty sure I wouldnt be able to lift off the rack, never mind hoist above my head.Gyms can be incredibly exclusionary environments, particularly for anyone who doesnt feel clued up on fitness or who doesnt fit into societys vision of what a gym-goe r looks like. If you arent young and toned, one peek around the changing room door can be enough to send you scampering. This is particularly unfortunate considering that only23% of Americansmeet the recommended amount of exercise, which is said to be around150 minutes of moderate or vigorous activity per week in plus-rechnen to at least two sessions of muscle-strengthening activities.Women are disproportionately affected and areconsistently less active than their male counterpartsthroughout their lives. Studies suggest that alack of confidence and a tendency to feel self-consciouswhen exercising is a key cause of this issue. Gym intimidation is real, and it has major health implications. Those who are able to meet recommended health milestones will benefit from a wholehost of perks. In addition to preventing obesity and improving heart health and blood pressure, exercise also boosts energy, promotes better sleep, and stimulates brain chemicals that can leave you happier, less anxious , and feeling more confident. Moreover, the gym can be a great place to simply relax, enjoy yourself, and even socialize. Dont let being intimidated by that gym babe with the perfect deadlift form put you off from reaping these incredible advantages. If youre planning on putting in some serious gym sessions this year but are nervous about getting started, these tips will help you face the fear.Try out classesIf youre new to exercise, classes can be a great way to get started. Youll be able to try out new things under the watchful eye of an instructor and usually within a mixed-ability group. They are also a chance to figure out what you enjoy - fruchtwein gyms offer everything from Zumba toPilates, as well as more intense cardio and strength classes. With all of the options, youre sure to find something that makes you genuinely look forward to getting yourgym kitout. If youre hoping that classes will be a starting point for more independent training, pick a class that utilizes gym equ ipment and incorporates a variety of exercises. A circuit or weight training class will include a host of different moves, and a coach will be on hand to demonstrate and correct your form if needed. Once youre feeling confident enough, you can take your new skills out on the gym floor and design your own routine based on the exercises you enjoy most.Find a fitness influencer you can relate to and follow themIf you have no idea where to get started and dont feel confident asking for help, social media can be a surprisingly useful tool. There arefitness influencersfrom all walks of life and with a range of body types and fitness goals that can inspire you. Find a page that you feel aligns most closely with your own aims and hit the follow button.Youll find that most influencers post videos and photos explaining how to use equipment and demonstrating the correct posture for exercises. Many will even share full routines and gym sessions that you can adapt and try out yourself. Thats not to mention the major gyminspo youll get from seeing women you can relate to killing it in their sessions. I loveJessamyn Stanley, who advocates yoga for all body types and posts some great vinyasa flow videos andGrace Fit UK, whose super relatable content is all about those booty gains.Find a workout buddySometimes theres safety in numbers. Roping in a friend to join you at the gym may help to alleviate some of your nerves - its even better if theyre a seasoned gym-goer and can show you some moves.Even if your companion is as clueless as you are, bringing a buddy along to the gym has a whole host of benefits. Youll feel less self-conscious with someone to laugh off trying new things out with, you can figure out equipment together, and you can do some partnered workouts as a fun and sociable way to make the most out of your membership.Dont be afraid to ask for helpSee those personal trainers hanging around? Theyre there to help you Dont be afraid to ask a member of gym staff to exp lain how to use a machine or to check your form - theyll probably be pleased that youre giving them a break from tidying up the dumbbells. If youd like more tailored attention and have the funds to do so, then you can also enlist the help of a personal trainer. This doesnt have to be a long-term commitment or a regular part of your routine - I personally shudder at the thought of having someone shouting encouragement as I sweat my way through another set of burpees twice a week. Most trainers will be happy to arrange a one-off session to figure out a personal workout plan that you can do in your own time. Youll feel much more confident knowing that your gym session has a professional seal of approval.Remember that people probably arent paying attention to youEveryone in the gym is focused on their own workout, and as much as it might seem like people are staring, the fact is they simply arent. And if someone spots you, so what? Everyone was once a gym newbie and most people wont ju dge you, even if you are looking slightly unsure. You should also be aware that there are a multitude of ways that you can use gym equipment, so people wont necessarily assume that youre doing something wrong if youre trying things out and arent totally sure what to do.If youre not quite ready to break out of your comfort zone, stick to things that you feel safe doing and see how often you hone in on someone else. The likelihood is that youll barely notice other gym-goers - and theyll barely notice you either.Whatever your gym journey looks like, remember that even stepping foot in a new and potentially intimidating environment is a massive achievement. Focus on your goals, and most importantly, have fun. Youll soon feel right at home. This article was originally published on The Everygirl.

Gary Vaynerchuck on Authenticity

Gary Vaynerchuck on Authenticity Gary Vaynerchuck on Authenticity Where has this guy been all my blogging life? He says so much that I think only with WAY more pizzazz.Gary Vaynerchuck is an entrepreneur and a social media guru. If youre like me, watching his videos will give you tons of ideas and renew your energy if youre a little off. (Or he might just annoy you, which Im sure hed agree is perfectly possible -)) I love listening to Gary because he so often says exactly what Im thinking. And heres the funny thing I was thinking that while I was watching his videos (wow, it would be great if I could be that way but Im such an introvert blah blah) and then I clicked on this video, which is Garys response to all those people who come up to him and say I wish I could be like you but Im such an introvert. (See Just as I was thinking it, he had a video about it. Its freaky)But he goes on to say in his video that he is just being himself and that is the core of his success. Not that hes l oud and shouty, but that hes authentic, and that it doesnt matter whether you shout or whisper, as long as you are authentic about it. Which, as anyone who has been reading my blog for a while knows, is exactly what I think is the key to job search success. Not inflating your resume to impress people. elend trying to be like the other guy. Just being authentically you.One great example of this is Barack Obama. Whatever your politics, you probably agree that Obama was pretty unflappable during his 2-year long campaign. I follow politics closely and during the campaign, I read blogs about both campaigns every day. Each side was throwing advice at their candidate (He needs to be more/less or this or that. He needs to change this or that. He should stop this or that. He needs to start this or that). In Obamas case, the advice was mostly to fight more be more aggressive get in McCains face. But he didnt. Ever. Not once. And he won and when they did exit polls, they found that the lack of attacks was a key factor in his ability to win over swing voters. All those people saying you need to be a different person than the one you really are were wrong. He and Vaynerchuck couldnt be more different if they tried and yet in this way they are the same.So if I were hiring, Id like Vaynerchuck because of his passion and energy and smarts. But what if someone walked in for an interview who was just as knowledgeable, just as smart, had just as many good ideas, but had a different personality? Well that person would be cool too, because theyd bring a different set of strengths to the role.In the end, its about what you do, not how you do it. So learn from others, admire others, pick up tips from others but stick to being exactly who you are because thats how youll fill the potential that only you have.

Worried about taking a vacation while job hunting Heres how to do both

Worried about taking a vacation while job hunting Heres how to do bothWorried about taking a vacation while job hunting Heres how to do bothThe summer months can be a tough season to job hunt The majority of your contacts might be on vacation, enjoying summer hours or merely trying to get as much crucial work done as fast as they can so they can hit the beach. But while you might be putting much of your outreach on hold, you also dont want to miss out on any actual jobs that do come up. And, its also summer for you, after all, and you have time on your hands. That can create a dilemma for a full-time job hunter, whether you had a vacation planned before your situation or you decide to take advantage of your time off to enjoy a visit with friends or family. Being inaccessible as that HR director youve been trying to track down finally contacts you can be a roadblock for your interviewing strategy.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Produc tivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreBut sitting around waiting for the phone to ring isnt necessarily the only answer. Here are some tips for attaining balance, but not abandoning your job hunt, when you have a vacation planned.1. Choose your drehort wiselyAssuming youre in control of where you go (as in, your presence is not required at a destination wedding or family reunion) try to organize your trip as close to home - or the location where you are looking for a job - as possible so that you can show up if you are called in for an interview and absolutely cant miss out, says Chris Chancey, a career expert and founder and owner of Amplio Recruiting. But if you do decide to go further afield, think about a location where you might consider relocating, assuming that is potentially in the cards. Youll have the chance to soak in the ambiance and decide if its for you.2. Do some homework before you departIf you worry that your job hunt will consume you while youre gone, s et some groundwork in the days and weeks leading up to it to so you feel on top of the process. Chancey recommends starting a list of potential networking connections and tweaking your resume and LinkedIn profile to correspond to the jobs you hope to apply to, so you are ready when you return. The idea here is to lay down the basics of your job hunt so you can focus on the time with your loved ones, he says.3. Be clear that you might not respond immediatelyPut an out of office reply on your email account so that the employer will know that youre away and therefore they will likely receive a delayed response, suggests career strategist Missy Scott. That doesnt mean that you should go totally off the grid she recommends checking your email at least daily so that youre able to respond, or even more often if activities permit. But giving the HR person a heads-up that youre typically more responsive can allay any quick decisions they might make to move on to the next in line.4. Use downt ime wiselyUnless its completely unavoidable, you wont want to miss a hike to the waterfall or visit a theme park. Instead, find a block of time, whether it is early in the morning or between activities, and use the quiet time to focus on scanning job boards or other application tasks, suggests Chancey. Fortunately, with a smartphone by your side, you can keep up with any job-related updates throughout the day without feeling anxious about missing an important email or worrying about annoying your loved ones.5. Talk about your job searchYou never know who might be that golden connection so dont have any qualms regarding discussing your job hunt if you meet new people during your vacation, suggests Chancey. Practice a short elevator speech so you can easily frame your pursuits and then dont be shy about telling others you are looking for a job. Take their contact information so you can reach out when you get home and share your LinkedIn and other information in case they hear of anyth ing.6. Be upfront if you have already started the hiring processIf youre actively involved in an interview process, the worst possible thing you can do is ghost a hiring manager, so let your contact know at the beginning of the process about your pre-planned vacation. Just being aware of the timeline can save a lot of headache later, says Elatia Abate, a human capital expert who has run auf der ganzen welt recruiting for Anheuser-Busch InBev and Dow Jones. Sometimes the process can be accelerated or condensed in order to be completed before the planned time away, or one round could be scheduled before and another after. If the need is urgent, show youre a team player by being available if necessary by phone or via a Skype or Facetime interview. You dont want to miss out on a great opportunity because of timing. But dont blow off your usual interview protocol, Abate cautions. Prep the night before and find a quiet room where you can concentrate and be heard without distraction.7. Foll ow up when you get backAs soon as you return, follow up with anyone you interacted with. If there was an interview you missed because you couldnt leverage technology and they couldnt wait, make sure to reinforce that you would love to keep in touch for future opportunities, Abate says.8. Dont worry that this will take you out of the runningJob hunting while having pre-planned travel can be daunting for, acknowledges Abate, but she says it neednt be. Most hiring managers prioritize having a quality candidate hired into the job versus just getting someone in the seat quickly, she says. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will ersatzdarsteller your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

80 rule of effective thinking

80 rule of effective thinkingThe 20/80 rule of effective thinkingHow much time should I spend thinking instead of doing? Its one of the biggest questions I struggle with. One side of me says, Without doing you will never achieve anything.Aleidher side says, Without thinking things through, you might end up doing thewrongthings.Thinking by itself is worthless because if you never do anything, whats the use? And if you only act without thinking, youll probably end up in jail or in a ditch. Thats why this topic is so important. But most of us never even consider living by a thinking/doing ratio.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraI live by a 20/80 ratio. Before I explain why that is, and how you can create yourownratio, lets look at some of the most respected individuals of our time Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger, two investors who are celebrated for theirgood decisionsand thinking p rocesses. They are not only thinkers, but they are also successfulpractitioners.?What Are YouDoing? Its well-known that Warren Buffett spends most of his time reading and thinking. Its the first thing he does when he comes to his office in Omaha. According to his biographer,Alice Schroeder, Buffett reads at least 5 hours a day. He reads newspapers, magazines, annual reports, and books. To many people, reading looks like inactivity. Theres nothing active about reading. And from the outside, it looks like youre not doing anything.I think thats the first problem with the challenge were addressing in this article. Our western society is biased towards doing. Just think about how often people ask you this question What are youdoing? You probably heard it at school. And you probably hear it at work or at home all the time. People want to DO something at all times. Activity is the key.My guess is that the thinking/doing ratio at most organizations is something like 10/90. We spend far more tim e doing than thinking. If we take a lesson out of Buffett and Mungers book, we can say thats not an effective ratio.According to Peter Bevelin, author ofPoor Charlies Almanack, Buffet and Munger have a habit of committing far more time to learning and thinking than to doing. That means the ratio these guys have is more like 80/20- thinking/doing. To be clear, Im only guessing here but by the looks of it, thats the ratio Buffet and Munger have.Whats Your Nature? So should weallspend 80% of our time thinking? It depends on two factorsYour natureYour workSome people are natural thinkers. They love to spend time in their heads. They love to read. And they love to talk about ideas. There are also people who hate that. The lesson here is that everyone is different. Youre probably someone who likes to think, otherwise, you would not read this article. A person who only acts and never thinks will not take five minutes to read this. But theamountof thinking we need also depends on our work. Warr en Buffett is a value investor. He makes very few decisions. But when he does, he makeshugedecisions and large bets. Outside of investing, there are few professions like that. Most of us need more execution. We need to make calls, write emails, have meetings, and create things. So even though Ive found an ideal ratio that works for most people (which Ill talk about later), remember to always look at your nature and your work. Your ideal ratio depends on those two things. But what about people who dont like to think and want todomore?Writing 500 Books In 42 YearsIsaac Asimov is considered one of the most prolific writers of the 21st century. His first book,Pebble in the Sky, was published in 1950.By the time he passed away in 1992, he had written about500 books. Sure, some of his books were very short, but still, its an impressive bibliography. That comes down to about one book per month. Thats a lot ofdoing. It seems like there was very little inactivity in his life during those years . He cranked out one book after the other. It almost looks like his ratio was 100% doing. He could probably think and do AT THE SAME TIME. Most of us are not like that. We do either one or the other.Be DecisiveWeve looked at two extreme cases. Buffett and Munger spend most of their time thinking. Asimov spent most of his time doing. Unfortunately, outliers do not represent reality. However, we can learn from them. What Ive learned is that we need to be decisive.Warren Buffett would not be this famous if he didnt make big bets. And Asimov wouldnt write 500 books without committing to writing every day. The lives of both men were different, but both were decisive in their actions. And thats the key to figuring out your ideal thinking/doing ratio. Its not the amount of thinking we do, its thequalitythat matters. If you spend 40% of your time thinking while being indecisive and all over the place, youre wasting your time.In contrary, if you spend only 1% of your time thinking and if you ar e very decisive, youre being effective. The 20/80 Rule Of Effective ThinkingI live by what I call The 20/80 rule of effective thinking. I think for most professionals in todays age, that ratio of thinking vs doing is sufficient. Even though Im a natural thinker, I need to remind myself to execute more than Ithink.Again, its not the ratio that counts, its thequalityof your thinking. And ultimately, the quality of your thinking impacts the outcomes you achieve.Remember that poor outcomes in life are excusable but poor thinking and decision-making are not.The reason is that you do not have any control over the former- but you do haveallthe control over the latter. Thats why the 20/80 ratio will probably save you a lot of time, money, and worry. When you take time to think things through, youre less likely to make emotional decisions. When youre decisive, you make a decision andstickto it- which is ultimately how we achieve our goals. This article originally appeared on Darius Foroux. You mig ht also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Survey ????shows that 88% of the workforce procrastinates

Survey ????shows that 88% of the workforce procrastinatesSurvey ????shows that 88% of the workforce procrastinatesWhat part of knowledge workers procrastinates on average? Its a simple question. But until now, no one provided an answer.Research has only focused on the procrastination behavior of college students. It doesnt require much research to answer that question. Students are notorious for procrastinating. And yet, most scientific studiesdidnt do a good job in capturing how many students actually procrastinate. One study estimated that 25 to 75 percent of college students procrastinate on academic work.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThats a useless statement. Is it 25% or 75%? Thats a huge difference. Also, scientists often surveyed only a hundred people or less. While research into the consequences of procrastination hasbeen solid, there are no strong results that show how many people actually procrastinate.Another issue I have with scientific studies is that students dont represent the workforce. Students dont have the same urgency and responsibility that professionals have. Thats why I set out to discover how many professionals procrastinate in my own study.2,219 people participated in this surveyThe survey I conducted had one goal. I wanted to know what percentage of the workforce admits to procrastinating on an average day. I didnt pose a long list of questions to establish whether someone procrastinated or not.The respondents of this survey are conscientious people who read articles on productivity and habits. My expectation is that the people who participated are more motivated than average professionals, simply because they are interested in improving themselves. In the study, I ask two questionsHow many hurs did you procrastinate yesterday? What describes your situation best? Why did I ask how much someone procrastinatedyesterday? Well, take a look at what you did today or yesterday. Its highly likely that today looked a lot like yesterday, and that yesterday looked like the day before. Were creatures of habit. Today, we do the same things we did yesterday. If we were productive today, were probably productive tomorrow. The same is true for procrastination. If you putt off work until tomorrow, you will probably repeat that behavior when tomorrow comes.Thats the background of this study. 2,219 people responded to the survey. To my knowledge, thats the biggest survey ever conducted on procrastination. You can download a presentation of the findings here.If you want check the raw data, heres the Excel file.A widespread issueWith 88% of the workforce admitting that they procrastinate at least one hour a day, its safe to say this is a widespread issue. This result is also in stark contrast with previous research that showed 25% 75% of people procrastinate. Its more common than we assume. But I only procrastinate a bit. Doesnt mat ter, my friend.A person who only procrastinates 1-2 hours a day is not better than someone who does it for 5+ hours. Procrastination is procrastination.Im speaking from experience. In college, I procrastinated forweeks.Years later, when I had a job, I procrastinated 1-2 hours a day (sometimes more). In both cases, I didnt achieve my full potential. Thats the bottom line.Unfortunately, I cant tell you why we procrastinate that was also not the purpose of this study. But I have some hypothesesToo many distractions- Too many workplaces harm our productivity. We are interrupted all the time. That makes it impossible to do focused work. On top of that, our smartphones are a big source of distraction. With so many distractions, procrastination becomes easy.Inner conflicts- Many of us are stuck at jobs that dont align with our skills and values. That causes inner conflict and lack of motivation. As a result, knowledge workers are more likely to put off work.Lack of productivity skills- Know ledge work is complex and requires a significant effort from our brains. If we dont knowhowto get work done, how can we expect to achieve results? Organizations and entrepreneurs should take their productivity training seriously. Its like physical exercise- you need to repeat the basics to keep your strength. The reasons why we procrastinate remains complex. Its up to each individual to figure out why they put off important things. The good news about the causes is that we can overcome them all. Procrastination is dangerous behavior. Most people recognize that. But no matter how intelligent people are, most of them underestimate the frequency of theirprocrastination.I firmly believe we can all procrastinate less. We can be more productive (heres what I do to overcome procrastination). We can get our work done without wasting time. And we can also make more time for things that matter to us.For years, many knowledge workers have been proposing shorter workdays. The proposition is attra ctive Simply do your work, dont waste time, get results, and when youre done, call it a day.Thats easier said than done. The reality is that were not yet capable of such a thing. We need more self-regulation and discipline to beat procrastination. But once we accomplish that, I do think we can achieve the same results in less time. In that case, we will have more freedom.A productive knowledge worker who doesnt procrastinate can decide between two optionsAchieve thesameresults in less time (and work less)Achievemorein the same timeThat will improve the quality of workandlife. But it all starts with overcoming procrastination. elend just for a day. Butevery day. This article originally appeared on Darius Foroux.

Developing Self-Motivated Employees - Spark Hire

Developing Self-Motivated Employees - Spark HireInstead of having a small party every time an employee completes an email, report, or presentation, how should managers, supervisors, and human resources professionals help their employees be self-motivated? On the Human Resources website Fistful of Talent, author Tim Sackett delineates what merits reward and what doesnt I believe in the daily grind. People who grind daily are people who I want on my bus. Dont get me wrong I love to celebrate But I love to celebrate big accomplishments not daily deliverables. He goes on to say that many people in the workplace favor the kind of celebration that he opposes because they simply confuse it with communication. So, keeping your employees motivated to do their jobs might simply be a case of improving your channels of communication. The natural follow-up question becomes how is that accomplished? For starters, be clear about your expectations for employee performance and communicate what end g oals will merit celebration. This can be done as you and your employees platzdeckchen annual goals, creating the expectation that productivity and progress with bigger tasks will be highly regarded as opposed to the smaller tasks performed on a daily basis.Set a company culture of high reward At least within your department, if you cannot affect this change within the entire company, foster an atmosphere that recognizes high performing employees with significant reward. While you obviously cant flash around the raise that youve given to one employee or another, you can recognize them in a myriad of ways that not only show appreciation but give high visibility to their contribution to the company. For example, if your company has a monthly office-wide meeting or distributes a regular newsletter, call out the employee for their work, emphasizing the significance of their contribution.Encourage risk and innovation As a manager, you most likely have a sense of your employees day-to-day activities, but do you know about the nuances of their daily grind? Are there steps they can take to minimize distractions, eliminate useless or time-wasting, outdated tasks? Encourage them to create new processes within their roles that make their daily grind more productive. This will give your employees more ownership and control over their job while actively pursuing greater productivity. If their innovation is successful, it can be used as a motivator to do the same elsewhere or to help their colleagues conduct similar evaluations of their jobs. And if its not successful? Even failure can be an excellent motivator if met with the correct readjustments and feedback.Encouraging employees to motivate themselves through the daily grind doesnt mean leaving them completely to their own devices, nor does it promote micromanagement to keep them on a productive track. With the right expectations clearly communicated, employees can aim for the level of productivity that will garner rewar d and recognition within their company. If theyre not up to the task, with your expectations set reasonably high, youll quickly identify those whose innovation could help the company move forward. How do you develop self-motivated employees? Do you only celebrate big accomplishments vs daily deliverables in the office? Let us know in the comments.IMAGE Courtesy of Flickr by Nono Fara
